Role Overview

We are seeking an Open Source Talent Onboarding Manager to create and manage a streamlined, welcoming, and supportive onboarding experience for all new contributors joining our open-source community. In this role, you will be responsible for designing onboarding programs, guiding contributors through their initial steps, and providing the resources and support they need to make meaningful contributions. This role is ideal for someone with a passion for open-source communities and talent development, who enjoys creating efficient, inclusive, and engaging onboarding experiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and Implement Onboarding Processes: Create structured onboarding programs that introduce new contributors to project goals, community standards, and technical guidelines, ensuring a smooth transition into the community.
  • Guide and Support New Contributors: Act as the primary point of contact for new contributors, offering guidance on their initial tasks, answering questions, and connecting them with project resources.
  • Resource Development: Develop and maintain onboarding materials, including welcome guides, FAQs, and best practice documents, to ensure new contributors have clear and accessible resources.
  • Community Integration: Organize onboarding events, such as welcome calls or virtual meetups, to help new contributors connect with existing community members and feel part of the team.
  • Feedback Collection and Continuous Improvement: Gather feedback from new contributors on their onboarding experience to identify areas for improvement and make adjustments to onboarding programs.
  • Foster Inclusivity: Ensure that onboarding processes are inclusive and accessible, creating an environment where contributors from diverse backgrounds feel valued and supported from day one.

Requirements

  • Experience in Onboarding or Community Engagement: Background in onboarding, community management, or a similar role, ideally within an open-source or volunteer-driven environment.
  • Strong Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an ability to support and guide contributors effectively.
  • Organizational Skills: Proficiency in managing onboarding processes, creating documentation, and overseeing a welcoming experience for new contributors.
  • Empathy and Inclusivity: Commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive community where contributors feel supported and valued.
  • Understanding of Open-Source Culture: Familiarity with open-source community values and an understanding of the unique dynamics of contributor-driven projects.

  • Commitment: Part-time, unpaid open-source contribution role with flexible scheduling.
  • Duration: 1-6 months, remote work setup.
