Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Product Design Mentor to guide contributors in product design fundamentals, UX/UI best practices, and design thinking principles. As a mentor, you will support contributors in learning how to design effective and user-centered interfaces for AI-driven educational products, focusing on accessibility, usability, and collaboration within an open-source community. This role is ideal for a seasoned product designer who is passionate about teaching design and helping others grow within an open-source project.

Key Responsibilities

• Guidance on Design Principles and Best Practices: Provide mentorship on essential design principles, including layout, typography, color theory, and accessibility to help contributors create high-quality, user-friendly designs.
• User Experience (UX) Design and Research: Support contributors in conducting user research, developing personas, and creating wireframes and user flows to align designs with user needs and project goals.
• UI Design and Prototyping: Teach contributors how to create prototypes and high-fidelity designs using tools like Figma, focusing on interactivity, usability, and visual consistency.
• Design Review and Feedback: Review contributors' design work, offering constructive feedback and suggestions for improvement to meet product standards and enhance user satisfaction.
• Workshops and Design Skill-Building: Conduct workshops or Q&A sessions on specific design skills and tools, such as Figma techniques, design systems, and responsive design.
• Collaboration and Communication: Help contributors learn how to collaborate with developers, product managers, and other designers, teaching best practices for presenting design ideas and receiving feedback.

Requirements

• Experience in Product Design or UX/UI Design: 5+ years of experience in product design or UX/UI design, ideally with experience in AI or educational technology.
• Strong Mentorship and Communication Skills: Ability to explain design concepts clearly, provide constructive feedback, and foster a supportive learning environment.
• Proficiency in Design Tools: Skilled in using design tools such as Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD, with a focus on creating intuitive, high-quality interfaces.
• User-Centered Design Approach: Deep understanding of user-centered design, accessibility, and usability principles, and a commitment to creating designs that enhance the user experience.
• Problem-Solving and Creativity: Skilled in guiding contributors through the creative process, helping them solve design challenges and think critically about design solutions.
• Commitment to Open-Source Values: Familiarity with open-source project dynamics, emphasizing collaboration, inclusivity, and knowledge-sharing within the design community.
